Current State of the Fishery

From time to time we post reports on the state of eel fisheries in the News section of this website.

We are seeing promising improvements in abundance indicated by higher catch per unit effort (cpue) in most North Island areas.

Until recently, we have been applauding the increasing numbers of large longfin's in the fishery, but the pendulum has swung too far. In our opinion, large longfin dominance is affecting the species balance. Click Here to read more about the state of the Longfin Eel Stocks.

Recruitment as measured annually at a series of hydro electric dams is trending upwards.  2015/16 season was the best recorded.

Sites include:  Karapiro, Matahina, Waikaremoana and Wairua Falls (Northland)
